Benchmark Collective Accommodation Establishments – V4 and Austria

The Benchmark Report for the V4 countries and Austria provides a comparison of the development of collective accommodation establishments in the V4 countries and Austria over the period 2019–2025, based on the number of arrivals, overnight stays, and average length of stay. All monitored countries recorded a significant decline in tourism during the pandemic period followed by a recovery, albeit with differing dynamics. Austria has long profiled itself as the strongest destination in terms of the volume of both arrivals and overnight stays, while also achieving a higher average length of stay than the V4 countries. These differences point to varying tourism orientations, with Austria benefiting primarily from stay‑based and leisure tourism, whereas the V4 countries more often report shorter stays.

Within the benchmark, Austria consistently emerges as the strongest destination in terms of visitor volume (over 47 million arrivals in 2025). It records the highest numbers of arrivals and overnight stays and simultaneously an above‑average length of stay (4.29 days). Austria is also characterised by a high share of non‑residents, confirming its strong international position and its ability to attract foreign visitors for longer stays.

Among the V4 countries, Poland dominates in terms of both arrivals and overnight stays. At the same time, it is characterised by the highest share of domestic tourism, reaching almost 80%. In the indicative ranking, Poland is followed by Czechia, Hungary, and Slovakia. Although Slovakia records lower absolute visitor numbers, it stands out for the longest average length of stay (3.55 days). Also notable is the high share of residents in collective accommodation establishments, which reaches nearly 62%, whereas in the other monitored countries it ranges approximately between 50–55%.
